 < Development of World’s First Next-generation Microarray Analysis Technology >
- Numerous detection interactions simultaneously analyzed through single chip -
- Effective utilization in virus detection, disease diagnosis and new drug development -

□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister You Young Min) announced that the research team of Professor Kim Joon-won of Pohang University of Science and Technology has developed the original technology of the world’s first “microfludic particle-cluster-array platform” that can control microparticles and substantially improve the effectiveness of the  analysis of chemical and biomaterial interactions. 
    * microfluidics: the technology to control fluids in small space of millimeters
    * microarray: millions of very small materials accumulated on the surface of solid objects
      in order to effectively conduct analysis of large volumes of data 
 ㅇ When chemical and biomaterial interactions including disease diagnosis were analyzed with a single chip in the past, each interaction failed in complete partitioning which led to the possibility of cross-contamination, making it difficult to accurately analyze different interactions simultaneously.   
 ㅇ The research team of Professor Kim Joon-won used the trait of oil and water unable to mix to make a lot of separate space(30/mm2) which has thin membrane structures inside analysis chips and arranged various microparticles to each space in the number and order of their choice. His team has developed the technology to accurately analyze numerous interactions without cross-contamination of particle clusters.  
 ㅇ This analysis technology reduces test drug consumption to the range of multiple one tenths and one hundredths compared to the existing method and decreases the time for interactions by multiple times, thus making it easy to be used in many fields such as virus detection and disease analysis. 
□ The research outcome was published on the cover page article of the international journal “Advanced Materials” on 18 August(German local time).

 ㅇ Also, it was introduced as the new, next-generation microarray technology under the title of Playing Pinball at Microscale in the “Advanced Science News(20 July)” which selectively reports outstanding research accomplishments among the articles of the main and sister paper of Advanced Materials. 

□ Professor Kim Joon-won explained the significance of the research as “by securing the original technology for conducting complicated interactions and analysis among numerous materials in a single chip in an easy and simple manner, the time for analyzing antigen-antibody reaction and cytotoxicity test as well as the volume of expensive response test drug used can be greatly reduced which are needed in the fields of diagnosis of highly pathogenic disease, new drug development and generic drug(biosimilar).

 ㅇ Through follow-up research, Professor Kim Joon-won will increase the number of microparticles that can be arranged, diversify the functionalities of particles and realize more complicated and multiple analysis technology that could not be conducted via existing technology.

□ The research received support from Ministry of Science and ICT’s Global Frontier project(bio nano health guard research center) and leading research center project as well as Ministry of Health and Welfare’s R&D project for fostering research-oriented hospitals.
