 < Researchers develop yarn that generate electricity for itself >
- Opens possibilities for battery-less mobile phones, long-time flying drones -

□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister You Young Min) announced that Professor Kim Seon Jeong (Hanyang University) and his team has developed a highly advanced yarn that produces electrical energy by itself when it stretches and shrinks.

□ The outcomes of the study by Professor Kim and colleagues were published in the world-renowned academic journal Science on August 25.

□ The researchers developed a “twistron yarn” (carbon nanotube artificial muscles) by twisting carbon nanotube into a coiled shape. The yarn’s volume decreases when stretched in electrolyte. As a result, the capacitance to store electrical charge decreases and the yarn produces electrical energy equivalent to the change in capacitance.
    * Twistron yarn : A compound word of “twist” and “-tron (device).” It is a coil-shaped yarn similar to an excessively twisted rubber band.

 ㅇ A twistron yarn that weighs only 19.2 milligrams can power a 2.3-volt green LED. The yarn can also generate 250 watts of electricity per kilogram when it stretches and shrinks at the speed of 30 times a second.

□ The researchers conducted experiments that made the twistron yard produce electrical energy on its own using waves or temperature fluctuation. The experiments proved that the yard could be used as an energy harvester.
    * Energy harvester: A device that harvests small amounts of energy that are discarded or unutilized, such as heat, vibration, sound waves, movement, harvests, potential energy, etc., and converts it into usable electrical energy.

 ㅇ A twistron yard connected to a balloon and put directly in sea water produced electrical energy with each wave. The yard also made electrical energy when it was connected to nylon artificial muscles which move with air temperature changes. 

□ Professor Kim explained the significance of the study, saying “Unlike conventional batteries, twistron yarn can produce unlimited amounts of electrical energy semi-permanently. It is expected to be utilized in various fields such as large-scale electricity generation from the ocean, and continuous energy supply to mobile phones and drones.”
