Vice Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Meets with ERC President and Korean Scientists in Europe to Seek Ways to Expand Science and Technology Cooperation (August 16)
- Strive to recognize Korean scientists and engineers in Europe for their hard work and increase joint research with ERC
- Seek ways to innovate Korean public research institutes by taking a look around KIST Europe and advanced research institutes such as Fraunhofer Institute and Francis Crick Institute and try to use them as benchmark organizations
□ Vice Minister Lim Dae-sik of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Ministry of Science and ICT will go on a trip to Europe for one week, from August 16. The purpose of the visit is to benchmark advanced research institutes for finding ways to innovate public research institutes of Korea, recognize Korean scientists and engineers in Europe for their hard work and seek new ways for cooperation with European Research Council (ERC).

□ First, Vice Minister Lim will visit KIST Europe on August 17, which was established in Germany in 1996, with the aim of advancing into the European market. He will look into how research institutes are operated and listen to feedback from executives and staff members on hardships in operating the center.
ㅇ Also, ways to provide support to Korean companies advancing into the European market and ways to advance KIST Europe, through creating tangible outcomes from world-class joint research with eminent research institutes in Europe will be discussed in the presence of executives and staff members of the research institute.
ㅇ After that, Vice Minister Lim will visit Fraunhofer Institute, a representative public research institute of Germany to benchmark its best practices of innovation. He will also look for policy implications on how Korean public research institutes can have world-class research competitiveness.
□ On August 19, Vice Minister Lim will visit Imperial College to discuss topics such as talent nurturing in Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), a representative training program of scientists and engineers of the UK and cases of cooperation in the area of industry-academia-research institute collaboration, as to seek ways for nurturing scientists and engineers and improving operation.
ㅇ On August 20, Vice Minister Lim will visit Francis Crick Institute, Europe’s largest research institute in life science to benchmark cases of research institute operation and ways to provide support to core research areas.
ㅇ After that, Vice Minister Lim will have a meeting with Korean principal investigators taking part in international joint research projects of ERC, which has 6 Nobel Prize winners and 5 awardees of fields medals, to discuss obstacles they face in conducting research and ways to provide support to outstanding overseas researchers.
□ On August 21, Vice Minister Lim will attend EKC to be held in Glasgow, UK to recognize Korean scientists in Europe for their hard work and make connection to them.

ㅇ EKC 2018, which celebrates its 11th anniversary this year, is to be held under the theme of “Science, Technology and Humanity-Portal 4 Industry.”
- At the venue, keynote lectures will be delivered from eminent scientists and engineers from home and abroad and symposiums on basic science, energy, environment, adequate technologies, ICT etc. will be held to have discussions on interaction between science & technology and humanity and its future.
ㅇ In addition, Vice Minister Lim will take part in special session organized by ERC and have a meeting with ERC President, as to specify ways for cooperation such as identifying new joint research projects for strengthening science and technology cooperation between Korea and Europe.
