▷ Dr. Kim Dae Jung of TTA Elected to AWG Vice Chairman (July 8)
- Korea to take lead in wireless communication technologies in the Asia Pacific region
□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that in the 25th Meeting of APT Wireless Group (AWG-25) held from July 1-5 2019 in Tangerang, Indonesia, Dr. Kim Dae Jung of TTA was elected as Vice Chairman* of Asia-Pacific Wireless Group (AWG).
* Chairman and Vice Chairmen of AWG will serve until 2022 and their term can be extended once.
ㅇ A Korean national being elected to Vice Chairman of AWG can be interpreted as enhancement of Korea’s technological competitiveness and leadership in the field of wireless communication, as can be demonstrated by world’s first commercialization of 5G. This is meaningful in that it can further expand opportunities for Korean voice to be heard in global community.
□ AWG is an organization under Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT*) and an international organization created in September 2004 at the proposal of Korea with the aim to strengthen cooperation in the field of wireless communication technologies among countries in the Asia Pacific region and promote efficient use of spectrum.
* APT (Asia-Pacific Telecommunity): The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) was founded on the joint initiatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1979.
ㅇ In addition, AWG discusses agendas such as plans to jointly use and coordinate spectrum in the Asia Pacific region and jointly respond to international standardization activities of ITU research commission.
□ Director General Park Yun Kyu of Radio Policy Bureau of MSIT said, “as WRC-19 will be held this year, Korea is expected to increase global influence in the field of radiocommunication based on its leadership in the Asia Pacific region, where it can reflect national interests on the global stage as much as possible and play the role of intermediary. To this end, the Korean government will further increase support continuously.”
