2019 APEC TEL Meeting is Held (Oct 14)

- Share policies related to IT such as 5G, AI, and blockchain

The MSIT held the 2019 APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL) at COEX, Seoul from Oct 13 to 18.

APEC TEL is a consultative body to discuss ICT cooperation directions in the Asia-Pacific region. The recent meeting was attended by government representatives of 21 member economies and around 100 professionals and experts.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC): founded in November, 1989 and now has 21 members (South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, 7 ASEAN countries, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru)

APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL): founded in May, 1990 and is one of the 11 working groups under SOM Steering Committee on ECOTECH, to share polices by ICT agenda and discuss cooperation directions

The MSIT will present major polices such as Data and AI Economy Plan* and 5G+ Strategy and will explore ICT cooperation directions by sharing policies.

* Data and AI Economy Plan: a 5-year plan to promote the development and convergence of data and AI, which are areas of strategic investment for innovation-led growth from 2019 to 2023

(Vision) to build a nation where data and AI are used in the safest manner, (Key details) facilitate the entire cycle of the data value chain, build the world-class AI innovation ecosystem, and promote data and AI convergence

** 5G+ Strategy: a strategy to create new industries and services based on 5G. The goals are to achieve KRW 180 trillion in production, USD 73 billion in exports and 600,000 quality jobs in 2016 by fostering 10 strategic industries and five strategic services.

(10 key industries) Network equipment, next-generation smartphones, VR and AR devices, wearable devices, intelligent surveillance cameras, (future) drones, (connected) robots, 5G V2X, information security, edge computing; (five key services) immersive content, smart factories, self-driving cars, smart cities, digital healthcare

In his opening speech, Vice Minister Min Wonki delivered a message, “I hope that ICT cooperation will enter a new phase as we celebrate the 30thanniversaryofAPEC.”
