▷ Korea and US to Strengthen R&D cooperation in Public Safety (Oct 23)
- MSIT and DHS sign MOU
□ The MSIT announced that it signed an MOU with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) to pursue R&D cooperation on public safety and disaster response on October 23.
ㅇ The MOU signing ceremony was attended by Vice Minister Mun Mi-ock and William Bryan, acting Undersecretary for Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security at the R&D site of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
* Demonstration and explanation of a tiltrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAV, and UAV response technologies of SMEs
□ The Science and Technology Directorate of the DHS is a vice-ministerial organization that develops and supports technologies related to public safety and disaster response needed by agencies in the US, partnered with 12 other countries and the EU.
* Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and the UK
□ With the MOU, both sides agreed to explore ways to respond to natural disasters such as fires, typhoons, floods, and earthquakes and matters related to public safety such as public order or epidemics using science and ICT.
ㅇ Korea and the US will hold working-level discussions to substantially promote cooperation activities such as joint research, scholar exchanges, and conferences among research institutes, universities, and public agencies related to R&D.
□ Vice Minister of Science and ICT Mun Mi-ock emphasized, “The MOU we signed today carries significance that we are expanding our science and ICT cooperation into the area of public safety.”
ㅇ “I hope that Korea and the US will further advance exchanges and cooperation in various areas related to science and ICT, signing this MOU,” added Vice Minister Mun.
