The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that Vice Minister Jang Seokyoung attended the virtual G20 Digital Economy Ministers’ Meeting on July 22 (Wednesday).

Vice Minister Jang shared Korea’s response to COVID-19 based on science and ICT with G20 members.

He also introduced Korea's Digital New Deal initiative, which is aimed at improving the D.N.A. (Data, Network, AI), digital transition of education infrastructure, nurturing contactless industry, and digitalization of social overhead capital.

Moreover, He emphasized that establishing digital infrastructure is critical to the transition to a digital economy. He also introduced the Korean governmen's policies aimed at improving digital access for residents of rural and coastal areas and disadvantaged populations, as well as at applying 5G and AI to all sectors of industry, from primary to secondary to tertiary.

The first G20 Digital Economy Ministers' Meeting was held in Germany in 2017 to jointly respond to social and economic changes induced by digital technology development.

Centering around the topic "harnessing digital technologies to realize opportunities of the 21st century for all," suggested by the Saudi Presidency, the G20 Ministers discussed trustworthy AI, data flow, smart cities, measurement of the digital economy and security in the digital economy.

The G20 Ministers adopted the G20 Digital Economy Ministerial Declaration, which emphasizes the opportunities and challenges posed by the digitalization of society and economy, awareness about the cross-cutting impact of the digital economy, and the importance of international cooperation in the digital economy for inclusive growth. The key points of the Declaration will be reflected in the Leaders' Statement that is to be released after the upcoming G20 Summit (Nov 21-22).
